University City, San Diego, is a community located in the northwestern part of the city, adjacent to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The community derives its name from its original purpose of housing UCSD faculty and staff. University City is bordered by La Jolla and Interstate 5 to the west, Miramar and Interstate 805 to the east, and North Clairemont and Highway 52 to the south. This creates a triangular shape referred to as "The Golden Triangle". The neighborhood is part of San Diego's District 6, represented by Councilmember Kent Lee. The northern section of University City includes the Westfield UTC mall, a major commercial hub. Along with nearby commercial areas along Interstates 5 and 805, this region contributes to San Diego's "North City Edge City", the largest such area in the county. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, known for their trade routes connecting local villages. During the late 1800s, the region was referred to as Selwyn. In 1917, Camp Calvin B. Matthews was established here as a rifle range for military purposes. The site later became home to UCSD in 1964. A 2,500-acre master-planned community was developed in 1959 to accommodate university staff and students. Significant events in University City's history include a 1989 pipe bomb explosion near the University Towne Center mall and a 2003 arson attack by the Earth Liberation Front, which targeted a housing complex under construction. In 2021, the San Diego Trolley Blue Line extension reached the area, improving transit options. The community is bisected by Rose Canyon, which contains the Rose Canyon Open Space preserve and a railway line. This natural barrier divides University City into distinct northern and southern zones.
